Subject Line (for emails): Please Oppose Any Budget That Includes Cuts to Medicaid
Dear [Senator/Representative] [Last Name],
I am writing as your constituent and as someone who has a loved one with a disability, someone who either depends on Medicaid now or may need it in the future to access the essential services that make life in the community possible.
I urge you to firmly oppose any version of the federal budget or reconciliation legislation that includes deep cuts to Medicaid funding, including the $880 billion in reductions currently proposed. These cuts would be devastating to families like mine, and to millions of Americans with disabilities, older adults, and children with complex medical needs.
Medicaid isn’t a luxury. It’s a lifeline.
For many people with disabilities, including those receiving SSI or SSDI, Medicaid is the only source of coverage for critical services such as:
The proposed cuts would slash funding for these services. States will be forced to cap programs, freeze enrollment, and impose waitlists, making it harder or impossible for people with disabilities to get the help they need. In some cases, people could be institutionalized because their families can no longer afford to care for them at home.
The proposed work requirements and cost-sharing changes would strip coverage from people who are fully eligible simply because they can’t navigate burdensome red tape or afford new out-of-pocket costs. Many of those affected are already working, caring for family members, or living with serious health conditions that make employment impossible. These are not responsible cost-saving measures, they are bureaucratic barriers that will result in people losing coverage, getting sicker, and dying prematurely.
I live in [State], where thousands of individuals—including [my child / sibling / parent / friend]—depend on Medicaid to survive. If Congress allows this budget to go forward, my family and so many others will be forced to choose between financial ruin and inadequate care.
Please do not force families like mine to face that future.
I respectfully ask that you:
These decisions will define whether the United States remains a country where people with disabilities are treated with dignity, or one where care is denied to those who need it most.
Thank you for your time and for your service.
Sincerely,
[Your Full Name]
[City, State]
